Dividend Policy & Shareholder Returns
Alphabet historically avoided paying dividends, instead returning capital via share buybacks. That changed in 2024 when the Board initiated the company’s first-ever cash dividend. In April 2024, Alphabet declared a quarterly dividend of $0.20 per share (annualized $0.80), to be paid starting June 2024; management indicated it intends to continue quarterly dividends, subject to Board approval (www.sec.gov). The dividend has since seen modest raises: in June 2025 the quarterly payout rose to $0.21, and in June 2026 to $0.22 per share (www.thestreet.com). As of mid-2026, the annualized dividend stands at $0.88 per share – a forward yield of only ~0.24% at the current share price – reflecting a very conservative payout ratio of ~7.7% of earnings (www.thestreet.com). In other words, over 90% of Alphabet’s massive profits are retained or used for other purposes rather than dividends.
While the cash dividend is new and small, Alphabet has aggressively returned cash through stock repurchases. In April 2024, alongside the dividend launch, the Board also authorized an additional $70 billion in share buybacks (www.sec.gov). Leverage, Debt Maturities & Coverage
Alphabet’s balance sheet remains a fortress, with substantial net cash despite an uptick in debt financing. Historically, the company carried minimal debt – for example, just $10.9 billion in long-term debt at year-end 2024 (www.sec.gov).
